There are many attractions, restaurants, and things to do on Isla Mujeres.
Located to the east of the Yucatan Peninsula, Isla Mujeres is about four miles by boat from Cancun, across the Bay of Women (Bahia Mujeres). The island is only six miles long and half a mile wide, but Isla offers a variety of experiences and activities for every taste.
Enjoy outstanding restaurants, with cuisines ranging from Asian to Italian to Middle Eastern – and excellent Mexican food, of course.
Swim with the dolphins or whale sharks!
Relax on the powdery sands of North Beach or walk along the rocky shore on the Caribbean side. Isla Mujeres weather is perfect – hovering around 80 degrees – most of the year.
Isla’s "Main Street" is called Hidalgo. It’s filled with colorful boutiques and restaurants, open into the evening. You’ll love the live music – some of it spontaneous!
Isla Mujeres - The Island of Women
On the south end of the island, Punta Sur, picturesque cliffs are home to the ruins of the Mayan temple that gave the island its name, in a way.
For the Maya, the island was a sanctuary to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility. Legend says that Spanish explorers discovered numerous female statues honoring Ixchel, and named it "Isla Mujeres" (Island of Women).
